Using AutoFilter

Every control in the popup, what the price labels mean, and what the status bar is telling you.

Try it on sample listings

This is a working copy of the popup, wired to twelve made-up listings. Tick labels, flip switches and press Apply to page, just as you would on AutoTrader. Nothing here connects to AutoTrader.

    On / Paused
The switch at the top right. Paused shows every listing without forgetting your choices. Switch back to On and the same filter returns straight away.
    Light / dark theme
The sun or moon button beside it. It only changes how the popup looks. It starts with your system setting and remembers what you pick.
    “N of M listings shown”
A live count for the tab you're on. It only covers cars AutoTrader has loaded so far, so it grows as you scroll.
    Show listings labelled
One checkbox per AutoTrader price label, with how many of each are on the page. Untick a label to hide those cars.
    Hide listings with no label
Hides cars AutoTrader hasn't given a price label. Write-off cars aren't affected: they have their own switch.
Hide “You may also like” tiles
AutoTrader mixes recommended cars from outside your search into the results. This hides them. A recommended car that stays visible still has to match the labels you've ticked.
    Show write-off category cars
Cat A, B, C, D, S and N cars. They're hidden until you turn this on. AutoTrader gives them no price label, so this switch alone decides whether they show; the label settings don't touch them.
    Apply to page
Changes in the popup wait until you press this. When the page matches your settings, the button reads “Filters applied”.
    Reset
Shows everything again (every label, unlabelled cars, recommendations and write-offs) and applies it straight away. It doesn't change On / Paused.

    The price labels

AutoTrader sets these labels by comparing each car's price with similar cars on the market. AutoFilter only reads them. Here's what each one means, summarised from AutoTrader's own descriptions.

    LabelWhat it means
Lower pricePriced much lower than similar cars on the market. Worth checking why.
Great priceSlightly cheaper than most similar cars on the market.
Good pricePriced very close to similar cars on the market.
Fair priceOnly slightly more expensive than most similar cars on the market.
Higher priceMore expensive than most similar cars, though it may come with extras that account for it. Rare in most searches.
No ratingAutoTrader hasn't labelled the car, usually because there aren't enough similar cars to compare. Write-off cars never get a label.

    The status bar

AutoFilter adds a bar directly above AutoTrader's results whenever it's hiding at least one car. It stays pinned under AutoTrader's own filter bar as you scroll. Here's what it can show:
